Brought up by his grandfather Leib as his father had left for the united states and had not been heard of for ten years. Went to the council-school in Bartenstein. Learnt to be a businessman in Eylau (Prussia). Was a salesman in Schippenbeil in Meyer Levy's textile-business whose eldest daughter he married. It was the first marriage-ceremony conducted by Rabbi Dr. Bamberger of Konigsberg. Opened a textile-business in Rastenburg in 1865. Bought a house in 1870. Became synagogue-president ('vorsteher'). Moved to Berlin in 1893.
